Chapter 94–“Front Page Blues”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, receptionist, editor, an assassin, a wooden dummy, others

Synopsis- The Underground Daily Daily has been printing stories about Lupin RIGHT after the events happen, then they start to print them before he does anything.

Firsts-

Review- Half of the good chapters in volume 12 begin! Monkey Punch is at the top of his form everywhere here: great story, great artwork, great humor, great ending. This story kept me guessing the whole time with a surprised, “Ah,” at the end. An interesting chapter with plenty of twists, I recommend it. 10/10

Chapter 95–“The Man With 20 Faces”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Goemon, the Man With 20 Faces, his assassins, a kid, an assassin for the Ota clan

Synopsis- After a painful conference, Lupin has challenged the Man With 20 Faces to battle. Now he must prepare.

Firsts- First appearance of Goemon since chapter 88

Review- Sadly, this is the last good chapter of this volume. Lupin’s faced with a great challenge: how to defeat a man who can sense your intentions. The gang’s various attempts along with the initial conference are hilarious, and the way Lupin finally takes him down is very clever. The artwork is very good, but is still growing on me. 9/10

Chapter 96–“What You can’t See”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Goemon, Zenigata, Capt. Mushoku Tomei, crew members

Synopsis- Lupin has happened upon (crashed into) a pirate ship with the intent of robbing it, however, he, along with Jigen, Goemon, and Zenigata have been captured by the captain: an invisible man.

Firsts- First time the gang’s been together since Chapter 88

Review- This one had some potential. It also had all 5 main characters. Sadly, it falls flat on its face. The artwork is still great, Fujiko especially. And the action is great. But the jokes don’t work for the most part, with some exceptions (“Tell this guy he’s in the wrong comic book!”) and much more could’a been done with Zenigata. Not the mention that the ending is a Deux-ex-machina. 4/10

Chapter 97–“Lupin Sucks”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, random girls, Dracula, an old man

Synopsis- Lupin seems different. And his partners soon discover why: he’s become a vampire!

Firsts- First chapter not to feature Lupin as the main character since ‘a Day Without Killing’

Links to animated Lupin- Lupin becomes a vampire in the second TV series. But, I haven’t seen the episode, so that’s all I know about it. (get some more episodes, Adult Swim!)

Review- Oy, how the mighty have fallen. First of all, the artwork gets a bit too lazy and cartoony for a Lupin story, and, again, much more could’a been done with this topic over two chapters. I also agree with Jigen about the cure to Lupin’s vampirism: Monkey Punch CAN come up with better. Although certain parts were funny, it was just too stupid and childish a story for me to enjoy. 2/10

Notes-Originally a 2-parter in ‘Manga Action Weekly’
