Chapter 98–“Rasputin and the Wager”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Rasputin, a girl, 2 thugs

Synopsis- After being introduced to each other, Lupin makes a wager with the world’s most notorious con man, Rasputin, for their entire fortunes.

Firsts- Debut of Rasputin

Review- Hm. Monkey Punch’s been kinda struggling for ideas, hasn’t he? Although his artwork is still going strong, there’s not much action or comedy in this, as it serves just to introduce Rasputin. 6/10

Chapter 99–“Rasputin Returns”

Characters- Lupin, Rasputin, Jigen, Goemon, a Doctor, her patient

Synopsis- After the events of the last chapter, Lupin is PO’d, while Rasputin is influencing a lady doctor in his own way...

Firsts-

Review- It starts off nicely, then goes into the obligatory rape scene, the moves along gloriously from there. The artwork, (especially the doctor) looks great, but the bandages aren’t used amusingly. And the ending is pure Lupin. 8/10

Notes-On the first panel on page 44, Lupin’s bandages disappear.

Chapter 100–“Three Wives and You’re Out or Rasputin Returns (Again)”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Rasputin, a Doctor, Rasputin’s 3 Wives, Mr. Sego

Synopsis- Lupin, Jigen, and even Goemon are attempting to em...seduce...Rasputin’s 3 Wives to rescue them from his find control.

Firsts- First sex scene involving Goemon.

Review- 100 chapters. Most of them good, a few of them bad (see volume 12), but, an overall joyride reading and reviewing them. However, it’s a shame that this is the end of the Rasputin arc and it had to end like this. The overall weak premise is just an excuse to draw sex scenes and the humor falls flat. However, the final act is pure ingenuity. 5/10

Chapter 101–“Payback Playback”

Characters- Lupin, Zenigata, 2 men, 2 women, a victim of Lupin’s

Synopsis- After a clever arrest by Zenigata, Lupin is suddenly out of the paddy wagon, and leading the inspector in another chase!

Firsts- First Zenigata appearance since chapter 96

Review- Ah, finally, a story of the quality we’ve come to expect from Lupin III. Now, the artwork takes a small drop in excellence when it comes to the supporting cast, excepting the woman at the end, but Lupin and Zenigata never looked better. There’s a couple’a chuckles in this one, with the real smiles coming at the end. It’s low on action, apart from the bomb explosion and Zenigata using his pistol. The story is worth reading, because like many others, the ending is genius. 9/10

Chapter 102–“Saint Goemon”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Monjiro, various cops, Judge, the DA.

Synopsis- Goemon’s uncle was killed by a man named Monjiro, and Goemon wants revenge. However, the killer let himself get arrested to receive protection from Goemon. So, how will he avenge his uncle, the saint?

Firsts-

Links to animated Lupin- This episode became most of the second series episode, “The Last Mastery”

Review- Another good Goemon story. Although Monkey Punch draws Goemon’s facial expressions in the beginning almost too exaggerated to be taken seriously, the rest of the artwork is great, especially in the courtroom scenes. There’s quite a bit of comedy in this one as well, especially in the aforementioned trial. Although a fight between Goemon and Monjiro would’ve been nice, we get no action this time around. So, if you’re a Goemon fan (and I know how many of you guys & gals there are), you’re gonna enjoy this one. Even if Mr. Ishikawa isn’t your favorite, read it anyway. 9/10

Chapter 103–“A Treasure to Serve”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, an Old Man

Synopsis- Led by an old man, Lupin’s gone into ancient catacombs in search of treasure unimaginable...

Firsts-

Links to animated Lupin- Elements of this chapter appeared in a scene in the second series episode, “Curse of the Jumbo Juju.”

Review- A good ol’ comedy chapter. The artwork is a bit on the over exaggerated and lazy side (kinda like mine when I get close to finishing a chapter in my own book), but the slapstick is still funny, which is good because the physical humor is one of the most important parts of this one , along with Lupin’s comments as he navigates the catacombs. Things improve a little bit when Jigen and Goemon show up, and the ending is great. 7.5/10

Notes-Lupin loses his pants on page 158, and they’re even noticed by his partners 5 pages later, but he’s wearing them on page 165 and onwards.
