Chapter 74–“The Scottish Tragedy”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Goemon, Shuzo Makube, Lupin’s Dalmatian, Fujiko’s hound, various thugs and assassins

Synopsis- An assassin has come after Lupin, but thanks to Jigen killing the guy, Lupin has to go to Fujiko to find out who sent him.

Review- Volume nine begins with some murder. Monkey Punch artwork is standard L3 stuff, which is great as always, especially the action scenes and the characters’ expressions. There’s a few humorous bits, but the story itself is pretty surprising, in a good way. So, to this, I give a 9/10

Chapter 75–“Mr. Personality”

Characters- Lupin, Fujiko, the old man, the student

Synopsis- An old man has hired Lupin to teach his son to become a master criminal.

Review- “Life...isn’t...fair.” Lupin gets to play a teacher again, with hilarious results. The student’s failures are funny enough, but this also gives Monkey Punch a chance to show off his mastery at drawing physical comedy. If that’s not enough, he shows us a surprise ending as well. 10/10

Notes-Lupin was last a teacher in Chapter 20, “School for Spies”, back in Volume 3.

Chapter 76–“How to Turn a Prophet”

Characters- Lupin, Fujiko, a driver, Sanshita, Lupin’s men

Synopsis- A guy in a rig gives Lupin a lift, and as he’s riding along with an old man, Fujiko, and the driver, the truck gets attacked by men who supposedly work for Lupin!

Firsts-

Links to animated Lupin- Lupin smashes the glass of his car when the window gets cracked in “Castle of Cagliostro”

Review- Ah, the open road. This chapter’s got a few comedic moments, and the action on the highway is exciting and well-drawn. The story is intriguing and keeps you guessing until the painful (for Lupin)end. 9/10

Chapter 77–“Couch Therapy”

Characters- Lupin, Ginkaku, Kinkaku, Kinkaku’s women, Tome, Tatsu, a minion of Ginkaku

Synopsis- Lupin’s looking for Kinkaku’s treasure, they key to which is hidden inside his women. How do get them to tell the secret? Well, they have to be experiencing a certain type of excitement...

Firsts- First time Lupin forces himself onto a woman since “Camera Tricks” back in Volume 7. *First time Monkey Punch uses the male and female symbols in a visual metaphor for sex

Links to animated Lupin- I think this is a bit racy for TV...

Review- Ummm...right. Well, this chapter has Lupin becoming a rapist again, with some funny but mostly cruel results, but he gets his just desserts at the end. The artwork is of course, outstanding, with some amusing diagrams at the beginning. The story is pretty straightforward, not many twists, so I’ll hand out a 7/10.

Chapter 78–“Japan’s Most Wanted”

Characters- Lupin, One of Japan’s Most wanted, Jigen, Goemon, Zenigata, some cops, the Wanted Club members, Charlie, Daikichi Kaneuri, Sugamo, the bidders

Review- Not much really stands out, excepts for some amusing moments, and Lupin’s trick at the end. That’s pretty much it. It’s mostly bland. 5/10

Chapter 79–“Love Doctor”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko, Goemon, 2 other guys

Synopsis- Fujiko’s dying in the hideout of one of Lupin’s enemies, and he can’t get to her.

Firsts-

Links to animated Lupin- This became over half of the first series episode, “An Assassin Sings the Blues”

Review- A great improvement from last time, definitely. It’s nice to see Lupin show us his serious side every now and again, and this time is no exception. The artwork is great, especially when showing us the facial expressions of the characters, such as the sense of urgency in Lupin and the other guy. The story itself has a nice twist at the end, and an overall interesting feeel to it. A must read, 10/10

Chapter 80–“Killing Time”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, Mamou Kyosuke, Jirokichi

Synopsis- Lupin’s packing up his things and running for his life from Mamou, a time traveler who’s father was killed by Lupin the Thirty-Third.

Firsts-

Links to animated Lupin- This became the green jacket episode, “Beware of the Time Machine!”

Review- Another good chapter. Great art, a little bit of action here and there, a couple of funny parts, (“Boo hoo, I’m so...a little to the right...afraid.”) and a great villian along with showing an uncharastically afraid Lupin. Another favorite o’ mine. 10/10

Notes- “Mamou Kyosuke” is fun to say. Try saying it in a kinda deep voice sorta slowly. Well, I think so, anyway...

--

Chapter 81–“Cross of Visions”

Characters- Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, many women, Zenigata, Fujiko (I think)

Synopsis- After looking at a cross, Lupin has a vision that he killed his partners...

Firsts- First apparence of Zenigata since chapter 73 where he actually does something.

Links to animated Lupin-

Review- 3 great ones in a row, wow! All I can say here without ruining the ending is that the art is great, the jokes are funny, and the ending brought a smile to my face because of the humor and for the same reason that the ending way back in chapter 2 did. 10/10
